Profile of Shaoxing University

Shaoxing University is a full-time comprehensive university approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, located in Shaoxing. Its history can be traced back to the establishment of the Shankuai Junior Normal School in 1909, with Lu Xun once serving as its Supervisor (also known as Principal). In 1996, Shaoxing Teachers College and Shaoxing College of Higher Education merged to form Shaoxing University. In 2000, Shaoxing Health School, Shangyu Normal School and Shaoxing Staff Secondary Vocational School for Urban-Rural Construction were merged into the University. In 2005, the University passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of Education with a good result. In 2013, the University was approved as one of the master’s degree conferring units by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In December 2022, the University was approved by the Zhejiang Provincial Academic Degrees Committee as a doctoral degree-granting project construction unit.

The University comprises of four campuses, namely Main Campus (Campus East, Campus West and Nanshan Campus), Lanting Campus, Shangyu Campus and Songliuling Campus, with a total area of 2493.71 mu (approximately 166.25 hectares) and a total floor area of 763,300 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment amounts to 684 million yuan. The library houses 2.3854 million volumes of printed books, 1.3961 million volumes of e-books, 3.1769 million volumes of various e-journals in Chinese and foreign languages and 54 databases. The University consists of 16 schools and a university-affiliated hospital. It enrolls students from 26 provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities) as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and currently has approximately 19,000 full-time students.

The University comprehensively implements the fundamental task of fostering virtue and cultivating talents, and is striving to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents with a strong sense of social responsibility, innovation and entrepreneurship and practical abilities. It offers 61 undergraduate majors covering 10 major academic disciplines. It boasts 4 national-level first-class specialty construction points, 3 national-level distinctive majors, 12 provincial-level first-class specialty construction points, and 23 provincial-level key (advantageous or distinctive) majors. Additionally, the university hosts 4 provincial joint graduate training bases, 6 provincial key experimental teaching demonstration centers, 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 7 provincial off-campus practical training bases for college students, and 2 provincial ideological and political education master studios for universities. In the last two rounds of teaching achievement awards, the university won 2 national first prizes, and at the provincial level, it received 1 special prize, 3 first prizes, and 11 second prizes. Ten courses have been recognized as national-level first-class undergraduate courses. The university also earned 1 second prize in the first National Textbook Construction Awards and 1 first prize in the third National University Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition. The University is recognized as a National Excellent Base for Popularization of Humanities and Social Sciences, a pilot school for the second batch of National College English Teaching Reform projects, a pilot unit for the third batch of National School First Aid Education, a pilot institution for applied-oriented development in Zhejiang, a pilot unit for comprehensive reform of “Three All-round Education” in Zhejiang, a pilot school for classroom teaching innovation in Zhejiang, one of the first batch of curriculum ideological and political education demonstration schools in Zhejiang, and one of the first batch of research centers for curriculum ideological and political education. It is also among the first batch of pilot institutions for the “1+X” certificate system in Zhejiang, a teacher education base, a key teacher training base in Zhejiang, one of the first batch of pilot units for university cultural construction in Zhejiang, a base for calligraphy education for international students in Zhejiang universities, a calligraphy creation base of the Zhejiang Calligraphers Association, a provincial entrepreneurship demonstration base for college students, one of the first provincial entrepreneurship training demonstration bases in Zhejiang, a provincial incubator space, one of the first collaborative innovation bases for training talents in foreign-related rule of law, and one of the first language and character promotion bases in Zhejiang province. Notable campus cultural brands include the Fengzejiang Lecture Series, the graduates’ “Love Commitment” and the Excellence Scholarship selection. The university’s academy system reform and civilized dormitory construction have twice received first prizes for outstanding and innovative achievements in national university student apartment work. One case was selected as a typical example of mental health education guidance by the Ministry of Education in 2025. Its “one-stop” student community comprehensive management model received an “A-level” rating in the national ideological and political work cloud evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education, and its Yangming Academy has joined the National University Academy Alliance. Students have repeatedly won first prizes in national disciplinary competitions, with the university ranking among the top institutions of its kind in the province. Graduates are highly regarded by society, with employer satisfaction scores exceeding 98 out of 100. The university has been honored with the Ministry of Education’s “Outstanding Scholarship (Teaching) Award for Grassroots Employment of College Graduates.”

The University focuses on discipline construction, actively promotes content-driven development and collaborative innovation, and comprehensively enhances its scientific research and social service capabilities. It has 29 master’s degree programs, including 10 first-level discipline master’s degree authorization points and 19 professional master’s degree authorization points. There are 6 provincial first-class disciplines (Category B). Seven disciplines including Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science/Ecology, Computer Science, Materials Science, Clinical Medicine, and Earth Sciences have ranked in the top 1% globally in the ESI (Essential Science Indicators) international disciplinary rankings. The university has one national-level research platform, namely the National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Mining and Equipment for Deep Metal Mines. It also operates 23 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, including the Provincial Key Laboratory of Rock Mechanics and Geological Disasters, and the first batch of National Traditional Chinese Excellent Culture Inheritance Bases approved by the Ministry of Education. The university has co-established 5 branch centers of national key laboratories and engineering research centers. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Center for Chinese-Foreign Humanities Exchange, it established a calligraphy base, and jointly founded the Zhejiang Technology Transfer Center with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain, actively contributing to regional innovation development as well as industrial transformation and upgrading. As the primary completing institution, the university has received one Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award. Over the past five years, faculty members of the university have won a total of 103 scientific research awards at the provincial/ministerial level or above.

The University actively implements the strategy of strengthening the school by talents and insists on the combination of talents recruitment and cultivation, so that the structure of the teaching staff is optimized with a continuous improvement of the overall level. It currently employs nearly 2,000 faculty and staff members. Among the full-time teaching faculty, approximately 600 hold senior professional titles, and over 800 possess doctoral degrees. There are 64 talents at the provincial level or above, among whom 32 are national-level talents. These distinguished individuals comprise a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Distinguished Professors under the Ministry of Education’s Changjiang Scholars Reward Program, National Outstanding Teachers, recipients of Zhejiang Province’s Top Talent Project, winners of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, participants in the Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, Zhejiang Provincial Leading Talents, and recipients of the Zhejiang Provincial Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Furthermore, the university hosts 1 Provincial Key Scientific and Technological Innovation Team (collaborative), 2 High-Level Innovation Teams in Zhejiang Universities, and 4 Provincial Excellent Teaching Teams. Its faculty accolades also include 3 National Outstanding Teachers, 3 Provincial Teaching Masters, and 8 Provincial Rising Stars in Teaching.

The University adheres to the path of internationalized education, conducting all-round, broad-field, multi-channel international talents cultivation and scientific research cooperation, so as to continuously improve the internationalization level of education. It has established cooperation and exchange relationships with more than 100 colleges and universities in about 30 countries (regions) including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, and Japan. With the enrollment and cultivation qualifications for foreign students, the University attracts 503 foreign students from 54 countries (regions) to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Chinese language and Chinese culture. The University holds one undergraduate program in Preschool Education jointly organized with the University of Burgos in Spain, approved by the Ministry of Education of China. Furthermore, the University also implements the strategy of exporting outstanding education projects by setting up 18 Lanting Academies of Calligraphy in 16 foreign countries (regions) across five continents.

Guided by its motto of “Cultivating Virtue and Seeking Truth”, the university closely focuses on the “two major historical tasks”: renaming Shaoxing University and obtaining approval as a doctoral degree-granting institution, and deeply implements the “four major development strategies”: strengthening the university through talent, prioritizing disciplines, fostering symbiosis between the university and local community, and enriching the campus with culture.
