Shaoxing University is a full‑time comprehensive university approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is located in Shaoxing, a renowned historical and cultural city in Zhejiang Province.
History
1909 — Shankuai Junior Normal School was founded in February.
1911 — Lu Xun served as supervisor (principal) from November and advanced the vision of developing Yue scholarship.
1913 — The school was renamed Zhejiang Provincial No. 5 Normal School.
1923 — Zhejiang Provincial No. 5 Normal School was incorporated into Zhejiang Provincial No. 5 Middle School.
1944 — Shaoxing County Simplified Normal School was re-established in February.
1948 — The institution was renamed Shaoxing County Normal School.
1951 — Zhejiang Provincial Shaoxing Junior Normal School resumed operation in August.
1956 — Shaoxing Secondary Normal School was established in September.
1965 — The school moved from the urban area to Songliuling (Zangong) on the outskirts of Shaoxing.
1970 — It was renamed Shaoxing Prefectural Normal School.
1978 — The Shaoxing Branch of Zhejiang Normal College was established; preparations began for Shaoxing Teachers College, marking the start of tertiary-level education.
1980 — Shaoxing Teachers College was formally established in May.
1984 — Shaoxing College of Higher Education was established; Shaoxing Teachers College returned to the urban area.
1994 — The CPC Shaoxing Municipal Committee and the municipal government established the Preparatory Committee for Shaoxing University.
1995 — Shaoxing Teachers College and Shaoxing College of Higher Education merged to form Shaoxing University (Preparatory).
1996 — The State Education Commission approved the establishment of the comprehensive undergraduate institution known in Chinese as 绍兴文理学院 and officially styled Shaoxing University in English.
2000 — Shaoxing Health School, Shangyu Normal School and Shaoxing Staff Secondary Vocational School for Urban-Rural Construction were incorporated into the University.
2005 — The University passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation with a rating of Good.
2013 — The University was authorized to confer master's degrees.
2022 — The University was approved as an institution under development toward authorization to confer doctoral degrees.
2026 — The Ministry of Education approved the change of the University's Chinese name to 绍兴大学 in February.
